The toys for which dreams are made.
Like most collectors and enthusiasts, I have felt that one of the most sorely overlooked genres of action figures has been High Fantasy. Yes, the high end collector market and makers such as McFarland Enterprises have been filling the void, but when it comes to functional play, even dare I say it, adult play, well, we have been lacking.
Historically, there have always been representations of our worlds most memorable and terrible wars, and that area lacks nothing, given the current trends to please those enthusiasts. Now it is our turn, and what a turn indeed.
The figures are for lack of a better word, outstanding. The painting is very much likened to the customer style of painting the metal Dungeons and Dragons metal miniatures and those of Warhammer products. The real treat is that for a 3" figure, not much taller than our classic little green Army men of antiquity, these are poseable. Theoden is removeable from his horse, and has head and arm movement. The Elven archers can have not only a nocked arrow but be shown in drawing fashion. The swordsmen twist at the waist as well as some minimal shoulder movement, and the Uruk Hai can be posed in battle modes as well as fallen. LOTR lovers, as well as fantasy enthusiast have waited a lifetime for figures such as these. The attention to detail and durability of the soft plastic make these a far, FAR, better alternative to many of the larger action figures who while visually stunning, often are somewhat fragile. The beauty in the sculpts of these figures, and this should please those who wish to take the issues of war away from it for a while, is that
the weapons on many of the characters are removeable. So not all play and such need be centered around death and dying. Those without removeable weapons such as the archers can easily be placed in an archery tournament, and the swordsmiths, fencing practice, so you are only limited by your imagination.
As others have noted, there are small pieces abounding in the array of swords, shields, and other acoutrement, so you have to know your child before thinking "What a great gift!" My only mild complaint with the line, and this is purely from observation is that there are so many figures available and coming soon, but no true list of what is really available. This set alone, I came upon by happenstance, for it is clearly not sold in stores as of this writing and other online sources have missed this one plainly. It is not even included on the photos that grace the backs of the figures and playsets.
There are also Special Editions and Comic Con Exclusives that one should keep an eye out for.
All in all, I highly recommend these figures for those that play, those that collect, diorama enthusiasts and creators (such as myself), and anyone from any age that delights in extending the feeling of these great reads now films, for just a few hours more.
Armies in Minature
I have been an avid plastic Toy Soldier collector for over 30 years..Since seeing The First LOTR Movie, I hoped Someone would
come out minatures in the 2 3/4 to 3 inch scale. I have everything in this series to date. They are great...detail is superb, durability is up there also..Tho there are small pieces
that can be lost, I would not recommend these for children under
5 unless a big Kid like Myself was present during play Time..
i have in excess of 15,000 soldiers of all types...and These are
My favorites so far....Helms Deep Fortress playset is a must also....Terry Bennett
